Meet Casey Bethel
Casey M. Bethel is the 2017 Georgia Teacher of the Year and a 2017 finalist for National Life changer of the Year. He is a passionate educator, an accomplished scientist and a mentor to students of all ages. Prior to teaching, he earned a Master of Science degree in Plant Genetics from the University of Georgia and conducted experimental research at the Center for Applied Genetic Technologies. After 14 years of teaching high school science, he is now the 6-12 science coordinator for his local school district, coordinating resources, curriculum and teacher professional development for 14 middle and high schools.
Lessons he designed have been published in The Journal of Chemical Education. In 2015, he was nominated for the Presidential Award of Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. As a scientist, he conducts Biochemistry research at GA Tech hoping to find cures for Alzheimer’s disease and Inherited Glaucoma. The team’s recent findings appeared in Nature-Chemical Biology.
Casey speaks and blogs nationally on topics including STEM education, student engagement, teacher recruitment & retention and school discipline reform. Last May he led a panel discussion at The National Forum on Education Policy. He is one of the University of Georgia’s Top 40 Alumni Under 40, as well as a Georgia Forward Young Game-Changer.
Casey is a powerful and engaging motivational speaker, sought after by schools, school systems, and civic organizations from Atlanta, Georgia to Fresno, California & everywhere in between.
